WHAT I LEARNED ABOUT WRITING / STORYTELLING:
When working with an established character, and updating that character, acknowledging and tying in the new status quo with said character’s past can add weight to the story that might be lost otherwise.

WHAT I LEARNED ABOUT ART / STORYTELLING:
Utilizing “spot” panel borders on a larger image is an effective way to focus the storytelling in a manner that is elegant and novel.  It enhances the setting and context without sacrificing clarity.

RECOMMENDATION: A

NOTES / REVIEW / SYNOPSIS:
The brilliance of Mark Waid’s writing (similar to what Kurt Busiek brings to the table) is that he knows these characters so well and will show readers aspects of their character that are brand new, and yet feel normal and obvious once revealed.  Coupled, as he is, with brilliant artists (whose work skews toward more cartoony, which in my opinion, allows for a much broader range of emotions in the characters) only elevates this book to the much-revered heights it has achieved critically.  Great stuff.
